Discover The George Inn

Tucked away in Longbridge Deverill, just outside Warminster, The George is the kind of classic country inn you dream of stumbling upon after a long walk (or drive). Think comfy leather sofas, low beams and a crackling fire come winter. But the real showstopper here is the gigantic pub garden, poised on the banks of the river Wylye. This grassy idyll is around an acre in size and has to be one of the best pub gardens in Wiltshire, complete with bobbing ducks, a pretty wooden bridge and tons of al fresco seating.

Food here is largely Mediterranean-inspired and there’s a big emphasis on sharing dishes, like toasted focaccia with aioli, calamari and lamb kofta in tomato sauce (yum). You’ll find generous salads and flatbreads too, all served with fresh herbs, cucumber, pomegranate and ranch dressing. If you prefer traditional pub grub, no problem. There are plenty of classics like battered haddock and chips, hand-carved ham and steak, fresh from the grill. Veggies and flexis, fear not—there’s plenty for you too, and it’s all beautifully presented.

The location here is a bit of a winner – The George is immersed in some of Wiltshire’s most stunning countryside, yet it’s bang on the A350 and a short hop from the A303. It’s also an ideal pitstop for anyone whizzing their way down to Cornwall or Devon. And, if you enjoy too much rosé, there are 12 ensuite bedrooms to crash in. Whether you’re drinking, eating or sleeping, your canine companions are very welcome too. In fact, there’s even a full doggy menu (we kid you not), including chews, ‘lollipups’ and dog-friendly ice cream.
